this life is your life

This commercial below was produced by Levi's (and then pulled from the airwaves in the UK due to the image of the young person staring down riot police), and it raises questions. Here are the ones you are required to answer by Monday, September 17 (please post your responses to #1-4 in comments here on the blog; then figure out how to embed a video, recreate the assignment, and post it with your answers to your own blog. #5 will be a live performance):

1. From what poem/author does this commercial borrow (without credit)?
2. Why might the use of this poem by a corporation be considered ironic?
3. Does the poem reflect the reputation of the author? Why/why not?
4. How did you find the answers to #1 & #3? Describe your research process and your sources in detail.
5. MEMORIZE the poem and be prepared to recite it on demand.

    2. It would be really cool if we did groups, and made videos on our perspective of the poems.

    3. the poem doesnt reflect the authors reputation because it is up beat and inspiring, and from what i read, Bukowski did not have an upbeat or happy life.

  8. 1. The commercial borrows "The Laughing Heart", from the author Charles Bukowski.
    2. I think the poem is ironic because it's being used for a jean commercial when in means so much more.
    3. Yes it does reflect Bukowski's reputation because in his early life, it was difficult for him, but as time went on he found the "light" and his life became better.
    4. I found #1 by searching "levi's go forth poem" on GOOGLE.com. Then I clicked this link, http://theinspirationroom.com/daily/2011/levis-go-forth-with-legacy/. I found #2 by searching "charles bukowski's life" on GOOGLE.com. Then I clicked this link, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Bukowski

  9. 1. The poem is called The Laughing Heart and it is written by Charles Bukowski.
2.I think it is ironic because the poem talks about your life being your life and how you need to take the chances the gods offer you so it is weird they used it for a Levi's commercial maybe the jeans are a chance the gods are offering us?
    3. Charles Bukowski's life wasn't so good from what I read and in the poem it gives off a good vibe so i believe it does not give off his reputation.
    4. I googled Levi's Go Forth poem and it took me to this http://theinspirationroom.com/daily/2011/levis-go-forth-with-legacy/ then I read about his life on wikipedia

  10. 1. The poem is called The laughing Heart by Charles Bukowski.
2.Its ironic because its talking about something so simple "Levi's" versus something with much more meaning.
    3. I think it does reflect him because he had a hard but simple life but it can still be a great one.
    4. I looked up the poem and i analyzed it better with the info I found.

  11. 1) The poem is called The Laughing Heart and the author is Charles Bukowski.
    2) I think its ironic because its talking about living life without regrets and im guessing the pants live it through it all also because they are always with you.
    3) Charles Bukowski didn’t really live a good life when he was young, he tried to recreate something he didn’t have the ability to do when he was young.
    4) I googled Levi's Go Forth poem and I found this... http://theinspirationroom.com/daily/2011/levis-go-forth-with-legacy/

  13. 1. Levi got the poem, "Laughing Heart" from author, Charles Bukowski
    2. I think It's ironic because in the commercial it makes Levi jeans seem so important even though they're not. It makes Levi jeans sound so complicated and insiring even though there not there just simple.
    3. I think it definitely reflects the author because it just shows "It ,at not be much light but it beats darkness" his life may not have been very happy but he knew there was light. It didn't have to be a lot as Lon as you know there is light.
    4. I actually found this on a blog called just poetry, very interesting.

  14. 1. The poem is called The Laughing Heart by Charles Bukowski
    2. this poem is ironic because the poem and the pants have nothing in common. The pants dont have a life of their own, it's the people inside the pants.
3.he had a simple life when he was growing up, so i think he is trying to get people to take their life and do something with it while they're young.
    4. I googled the words of the poem and the name of it and the author showed up.

  15. · Charles Bukowski calls the poem The Laughing Heart.
    · I think that this poem is ironic. I also think the poem means that we should live our life to the fullest.
    · Charles Bukowski didn’t have a very good childhood when he was growing up. I think he was trying to tell us that we should live our life to the fullest no matter what and to have a good life.
    · I went to Google and typed in Levi’s Go Forth. Then it took me to some web page and I got all the information that I needed there.

  16. 1. The commercial borrows from The laughing Heart by Charles Bukowski
    2. It was ironic to use the poem and Levi jeans together because it made something so simple as jeans become something more complex almost like the pants are going to influence you on your paths in life.
    3. The poem that Bukowski wrote doesn't represent him at all the story is talking more about the life he wishes that he could've lived in.
4.I went and googled levis go forth poem and once i was able to find out the name used wikipedia to find out more about him.

  17. 1. The poem is called The Laughing Heart by Charles Bukowski.
    2. I think it's ironic because Levis is trying to make their pants seem so amazing through a poem when in reality they are the same as any other pair of pants.
    3. It reflects Charles life by him having a rough young life but he wants people to take advantage of their lives and enjoy them while they can.
    4. I found information for question 1 and 3 by going onto google and typing in charles bukowski. While on google I searched through links.

  18. 1. The poem in this commercial was called The Laughing Heart, by Charles Bukowski.
    2. The use of this poem in this commercial is ironic, because it is taking to people telling them how to live their lives, yet the commercial is trying to sell you jeans. The two concepts do not blend together. While watching the commercial you get the feel of life lessons, more than how great jeans are.
    3. This poem reflects the reputation of Charles, because he did in fact have a hard life, but from it, he learned these life lessons that he believes will help other people better their life.
    4. I found information on this website, after searching the words of the poem on Google.

I found information on Charles from Wikipedia.

  19. #1. The poem is called "The Laughing Heart" by Charles Bukowski
#2. This poem is ironic because the poem is about living life to the fullest but its a commercial about the clothing brand levis
#3. The poem doesn't really reflect the authors reputation but maybe his life as an adult. "There is light somewhere. It may not be much light but it beats the darkness", reading this line was kind of like him stating "My past wasn't an easy one but i chose to go forth with my life". His reputation became a good one because he decided to go forth in life so in a way it does reflect his reputation in a deeper way.
#4. I got the information on the poet by typing in the commercial name in the Google search engine. When i typed it in it showed the name of the poet and the poem. I then typed in Charles Bukowskis name and skimmed through a few different articles about him so i had enough information to answer the questions.

  20. 1. The poem is titled The Laughing Heart by Charles Bukowski.
    2. This poem is ironic because it has a different more deep meaning then just a pants commercial.
3.Bukowski didnt seem to have such a good life and it doesnt really reflect the author.
4.I found the information by googling Levi Go Forth Poem, then found the poem and the author and more on the author.

  21. 1. The poem is called the Laughing Hear by Charles Bukowski.
    2. I think the use of this poem for this corporation is ironic because the poem is basically saying that life is priceless, short, and should be lived the best way possible. Then when you think of jeans, you don't see how valuable they really are and how lucky you are to have them. Mostly to everybody jeans are seen as a right, and as something that everybody has access to, yet there are people who would give anything to have just one pair of jeans.
    3. Doing a little research, I found out that the author came from an abusive childhood, had really bad acne which disfigured his faced in his teenage years, and later became an alcoholic. Then, by hearing the poem you can feel that this man had a touch life but manages to put the past behind him and live for today, and live in the best way he can.
    4. I found the answer to the firts question but reading other peoples post, then for the rest of the question I did a little background serach on the author and the poem to get a better idea of where the author was coming from and his state of mind for writing this poem.

  22. 1. The poem is The Laughing Heart by Charles Bukowski.
    2. The ironic thing about this poem is that it is being used for jeans brand commercial but there is a deeper meaning. It is not just about promoting some brand of jeans, its about not letting people taking control of your life, when you do you go into this darkness but when you are controlling it you seem to only find light.
3.I believe that the poem reflect on the author's earlier life. He didn't live in the best neighborhood, he had an abusive father, and he was made fun of from other kids for the way he spoke and the way he dressed. When he graduated from high school he went to college for to years studying art, journalism, and literature and then he moved to New York to pursue his dream of becoming a writer. After all the things he went through in his life was an example of the darkness and when he went to New York to become a writer he found lightness because he was controlling his life and he could follow his dreams.
    4. For question one I asked one of my class mates to see if they had any information on the author and the poem and the gave me a website about the author and his poems. For question four I went to Wikipedia and searched the author because the website about the author didn't show anything about the author's past.

  24. 1. the Laughing Heart is by Charles Bukowski. 2. the use of this poem is ironic because it is being used by a jean company which doesn't really represent how the poem really is but it does show you a deeper message by using the diologue of the poem which allows you to understand what their trying to tell you.3. I think that this poem doesn't really represent the author because its so inspiring and touching yet he had such a hard life. But it does show that he can move forward on not dwell on his past. 4. i found my information on the poem name and author by googling "levis go forth."

  25. 1.) The Laughing Heart by Charles Bukowski.
2.)It's Ironic Because The Ad Is Trying To Get You To Buy The Product And Show That You Should Be Going Along With The People In The Commercial Yet The Poem Is Saying Otherwise.
3.) It Does Because He Didn't Have The Best Time As A Child And Teen But Made Something Of Himself. Became Okay With Not Fitting In With The "In" Crowd.
4.) I Got #1 From Reading Other People's Posts And #3 From Wikipedia.

  29. 1)The name of this poem is called The Laughing Heart by Charles Bukowski.
    2) The use of this poem by a corporation might be considered ironic because the poem is basically saying that your life is your life and that you should know it while you have it, meaning that you should never let anyone take over your life because its yours. While a pair of jeans isn't going to change your life at all.
    3) The poem reflects the reputation of the author because he always knew that no matter what, there is light or faith for you to keep going.
