*August 22

JOURNAL TOPIC: [today's tunes: "Wankatakiya" and "It Is a Good Day" by Spirit Nation]

Since the words of these songs are unfamiliar, just listen to them as part of the music for now.  It's a good time to think about tone and moodTone is the author's attitude toward the characters, the subject, and/or the audience.  Mood is the emotional state of the reader.  How would you describe the tone and mood of these songs?  How would you describe the tone and mood of Earth on Turtle's Back?

AGENDA:
1. Journal
2. Recap of yesterday's seminar
3. Literary elements in Earth on Turtle's Back
4. Vocabulary quiz

  1. Writing a book, as it may seem, is not always fun. It sometimes drives an author to the brink of insanity. We as the reader don't entirely understand the entire motivation behind his/her writing, and we take their books for granted. We only enjoy the final product and don't really give a second thought to what the author went through to put that little escape portal on the shelves.

    1. Could you maybe turn writing a book into an assignment? It does sound like fun and I could write for hours if I had a good story set up.

    2. You're on. This is a good opportunity for everyone to participate in the decision-making process, and we have some time before novel writing month starts, so instead of me writing an assignment let's start a conversation. Here are some questions to start the ball rolling: 1. Can people work individually, or in teams, or both? 2. Should non-fiction be an option? 3. Graphic novels? 4. Who else has a thought on this?

    3. I think that working individually or in a group would be fun. As an individual, you get to put in your'e time and get all the credit. As a group, you have a much easier time because the collaborative process isn't by yourself. Non-fiction should definetly be an option because those genre of book still can have meaning behind the fake story.

    5. Maybe it can be our choice entirely? As for me, I would like to write a novel by myself and have it be nonfiction/ fantasy since those are my favorite genres. I don't think there should be a limit on the page number because I would like to write a lot. But could you maybe give us a long time write the novels. Perfection cannot be rushed.

    6. to me writing a book is alot of thouht proccess, though it does sound like a lot of fun. I would work individually because even if you do work as a team there is always the few kids in your group that doesnt do anything which isnt fair towards those that actually did most of it. there is pros and cons toward teams and individuals. like its a pro to get ideas and imput on the story as a team. i would totally write about nonfiction because its my favorite genre. and i agree with ethan about time limit.

  5. You cant please everyone i realize it takes a lot of work to write a book but not everyones the same he shouldnt have took it so seriously. you cant have someone that reads romatics only for example and have them read a mystery. people have their own prefferences.

  7. It is very hard to write a book that can appeal to everyone but in reality not everyone likes the same thing. I like mysteries because they can get suspenceful and at times the most unexpected things happen, but not everyone likes mystery so they can try to find something that they enjoy like fiction, non-fiction, romance, and ect. Some people say that they don't like reading, but i just don't think the found the right book yet.

  9. This is such a good little story ! It reminds me not to take things so seriously and not to expect to best of a situation. If you are proud of what you have accomplished than thats all that matters.

  10. This was a well written little story and entertaining to read.
Also while reading I think it ties in with having the write to your opinion because the girl states her mind about the book.
