If you compare it with the headlines, Modernist literature can be a
depressing, even shocking reminder that society appears to be going
awry. So why do so many people regard it as such a brilliant genre?
Why have generations of high school students been required to read about
sex play, book burning, and blank, staring, anesthetized adults engaged in the pursuit
of pseudo-happiness? Is there a silver lining to this dystopian
Modernist literature?
